You engage the sympathetic nervous system (which is responsible for flight/fight reaction). You don't think clearly and your decision making may not be the best course of action. As your first line of defense in an overwhelming situation is this: Take a couple of breaths. If you can, learn to belly breathe. Belly breathing is breathing from your diaphragm to get that maximum fill in your lungs.
